About the Program

The Teacher of Students with Disabilities Graduate Endorsement program is offered in partnership with Rowan’s NCATE accredited College of Education. It fosters an understanding of students with special needs and provides the pedagogical skills to accommodate them. This program is ideal for those who already possess NJ state standard teaching certification and wish to earn the Endorsement in Teacher of Students with Disabilities.

Curriculum - Program Code: .COGE-TCHDIS / Major Code: G609

The TOSD:GE is a part-time program offered in an accelerated online format. This endorsement requires the completion of 23 graduate semester hours (8 courses) in 3.5 to 4 consecutive semesters. Some courses require classroom field activities and special placements which will be arranged for by the College of Education Office of Field Experiences.

The following courses make up the Teacher of Students with Disabilities Graduate Endorsement program. Each course is scheduled in 8 week modules with each week of work starting every Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. and ending every Monday at midnight (Eastern Standard time). SPED 08515	Curriculum, Instruction, Transition in Special Education This course will provide an overview of instructional strategies for teaching students with special needs. It will focus on research-based best practices of instruction to students with disabilities in the areas of academics, social interactions, and transition from school to adulthood and employment. Training and education to prepare individuals with disabilities for successful community living will also be emphasized. Field-based assignments are required.	3
SELN 10585	Educational Assessment in Special Education Trends, practices, problems and issues in educational assessment will be examined. The course is designed to enable the special education teacher to administer criterion-referenced, informal, or standardized tests and to plan individualized educational programs for students with special needs. Curriculum-based assessment is emphasized.	3
SPED 08555	Education and Psychology of Exceptional Learners The course provides an in-depth study of individuals who are so different that they require special social and educational programming. The course content develops an understanding of characteristics and problems of handicapped children and acquaints students with the basis for identifying, classifying and planning to effectively meet needs of children with physical, mental, emotional and social handicaps.	3
SELN 10581	Implementing Positive Behavior Strategies This course provides the student with a comprehensive study of the goals of misbehavior in classrooms and in other settings. Specific theoretical techniques and methodology in channeling deviant behavior through the use of behavior modification and other management techniques will be explored. Curricula content, self-development, attitudes, and research finding will enable each student to acquire effective skills in working with learning resistant and deviant behaving children and adults.	3
READ 30530	Teaching Reading to Exceptional Children The primary purpose of the course is to present the philosophy of teaching reading to exceptional children along with the appropriate methods and materials. Major topics include the nature and needs of children who deviate from normal assessment of reading ability, emerging literacy, the role of parents and the child study team, intervention strategies, settings for instruction, word recognition, comprehension and study skill techniques appropriate for exceptional learners, adaptations of methods and materials, and organizational patterns. This course may not be offered annually.	3
SELN 10577	Collaborative Instruction in Inclusive Classrooms This course will focus on instructional strategies in inclusive classrooms for students with and without disabilities. Collaborative and consultative skills for working with parents, regular education teachers, special education teachers, support personnel, and school administrators will be discussed and modeled, as well as role play for team teaching in such environments.	3
SPED 08520	Clinical Experiences in Special Education This course provides the student with the opportunity to engage in a variety of field-based experiences with students with disabilities. Participants will be placed in self-contained, resource centers and inclusive settings to apply research-based best practices. A weekly seminar to discuss experiences and current issues in special education will be required.	4
SPED 10592	Clinical Seminar in Special Education This seminar course is designed to be taken concurrently with the clinical field practice. Students meet throughout the semester to discuss teaching experiences, problem solving strategies, and their own reflections on working with children and youth with disabilities. A teaching portfolio is also completed.	1

Admissions Requirements

The following is a list of items required to begin the application process for the Teacher of Students with Disabilities Graduate Endorsement program. There may be additional action or materials required for admission to the program. Upon receipt of the materials below a representative from the CGCE Admissions Processing Office will contact you with confirmation or indicating any missing items.

Bachelor's degree (or its equivalent) from an accredited institution of higher learning
Official transcripts from all colleges attended (regardless of number of credits earned)
Current professional resume
Two letters of recommendation
Typewritten statement of professional objectives
Minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 2.75
COE TOSD Field Experience Placement Form (pdf)
Copy of NJ Teacher Certification (only CEAS or Standard are acceptable) (If your certificate was issued prior to 1994, you must also submit scores from the Praxis II specialization area test – Elementary or Secondary.)
Interview with the Faculty Admissions Committee (The Committee will contact students directly regarding the interview. The interview can be in person or via telephone.)
During the interview process, a complete essay on reasons for desiring the Teacher of Students with Disability Endorsement will also be required

Below is a list of Graduate Endorsement TOSD anticipated start dates. The start dates indicated are based on the university calendar or the CGCE schedule. Your actual first day of class will depend on the course sequence which will be provided by a CGCE Enrollment Advisor once you have matriculated in the program.
