Autism Spectrum Disorders Certificate of Graduate Study (COGS)

About the Program

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, more children than ever are being identified as having autism spectrum disorders. Until recently, researchers had believed that autism occurred in approximately 4–5 in 10,000 births. Current national data indicates that the of autism spectrum disorders is about 1 in 150 children. In New Jersey, the number of children classified as autistic has more than doubled in the past five years and according to the CDC, NJ now has the highest prevalence of autism spectrum disorders in the country.

This program has been developed to meet the increasing need for teachers and other school and behavioral professionals to understand autism spectrum disorders and to be able to teach and manage children with ASD in New Jersey. Upon completion, students will:

  • Understand the definition of the various syndromes within the broad category of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)
  • Understand the causes of ASD
  • Learn how to design and modify instruction for individuals with ASD
  • Apply principles of instruction, including behavior analysis, to the identification, management, and evaluation of individuals with ASD
