Mission and Overview

Rowan University’s Graduate Student Organization (GSO) aims:

  • To promote the well-being of graduate students from all graduate level programs through educational, professional, and social events.
  • To act as a representative body for the general graduate student population at Rowan University.
  • To assist Rowan graduate students with networking and provide opportunities for students to develop professional connections.
  • To foster graduate student involvement in order in increase graduate students’ commitment and sense of belonging to the institution.

Membership

 

Requirements

 

The GSO shall consist of all interested full-time and part-time graduate students who attend Rowan University. All matriculated graduate-level student at Rowan University (on-campus, online, hybrid, or off-site) are invited to be members and are welcome to attend meetings and events.

Officers

 

 

President

  • Be the chief operating officer of GSO Executive Board
  • Supervise and direct affairs of GSO
  • Be the official representative of GSO
  • Abide by the policies and procedures of the GSO constitution
  • Attend Executive Board meetings

 

 

Vice President

  • Fulfill the role of the President when the President is unavailable
  • Be responsible for the web page, social media, and press releases
  • Prepare with the Executive Board the budget request to be submitted to CGCE
  • Oversee professional and social events
  • Be the official coordinator for GSO committees
  • Abide by the policies and procedures of the GSO constitution
  • Attend Executive Board meetings

 

 

Secretary

  • Record and keep minutes of all GSO Executive Board meetings
  • Assist the Executive Board with communications
  • Keep accurate records of all GSO business and keep a filing system and calendar systems updated
  • Prepare with the Executive Board the budget requests to be submitted to CGCE
  • Be responsible for maintaining the GSO mailbox and distribution of GSO mail and email
  • Abide by the policies and procedures of the GSO constitution
  • Attend Executive Board meetings

 

 

Treasurer

  • Keep accurate records of GSO expenditures.
  • Prepare two financial statements per semester
  • Receive and supervise the safekeeping and expenditure of funds.
  • Update the Executive Board members monthly on the status of the GSO budget.
  • Prepare with the Executive Board members the budget requests to be submitted to CGCE
  • Abide by the policies and procedures of the GSO constitution.
  • Attend Executive Board meetings and keep minutes.

Schedule of Meetings and Events

 

 

Fall Semester 2012

  • September 4th: 1st day of face-to-face classes for Fall Semester. Welcome back!
    Week of September 10th-14th: Interest Meeting/Elections (Details TBD. Current members should check their Rowan email and the Rowan Announcer for information!)
  • October and November: Professional Development Series - at least one lecture on professional development and topics that appeal to graduate students
  • November 6th: Election Day (no classes except for hybrid/online courses)
  • Week of November 12th-16th: 2nd meeting of the semester
    Holiday Season: Fall Service Project (We are working with the ASPCA this year. More details to follow.)
    December 14th-20th: Finals Week

 

 

Spring Semester 2013

  • January 22nd: 1st day of face-to-face classes for Spring Semester
  • Week of January 28th-February 1st: 1st meeting of semester
  • March 18th-22nd: Spring Break (no classes except for online/hybrid courses)
  • March: Spring Service Project (TBD)
  • Week of April 15th-19th: Social event for the semester
  • May 7th-11th: Finals Week

 

 

Summer Semester 2013

During the summer term, we brainstorm about upcoming plans with those members who volunteered at the spring meeting to serve as officers. Any GSO member is welcome to join us and details about open meetings will be posted on the GSO Facebook page.

 


 

Communication

 

Our Facebook page is also the perfect outlet for graduate students to connect and discuss anything Rowan or graduate school. It is a great place to search for roommates, set up study groups, ask questions to other graduate students, etc.

 


 

Contact Information

 

The College of Graduate & Continuing Education serves as the administrative liaison for GSO, providing oversight and assisting the organization with operating within the Rowan University system.

 

 

 

Cristine Mason, CGCE Academic Services Supervisor, is the Faculty Advisor for GSO.
