Before Your CGCE Course Starts

To help faculty get started with their CGCE course, some important points and reminders have been outlined:

  • Course Preview Week

Students are able to access your online/hybrid courses 5 days in advance. They will only have access to the syllabus, week 1, and related supporting materials at this time. The emphasis of the PREVIEW is for students to get familiar with the course layout, review the syllabus, and requirements, and mediate any technology issues.

  • Double Check Your Course Materials

Please take this time to VERIFY (or double check) your course materials in Blackboard. Of the upmost importance, please check that your Syllabus is in order and properly posted in the course. Please check ahead to all weeks of your course that are available. Contact your assigned Instructional Designer to request any fixes or updates.

  • Accessing Blackboard

ALL Faculty should access the CGCE Blackboard Learn system via our new CGCE Faculty Portal at http://faculty.rowanonline.com. Students are required to access Bb Learn via their own Student Portal located at http://students.rowanu.com.

  • Technical Support for Students

Students have been provided with a detailed technical support policy & procedure that is placed in every Online & Hybrid course. All students should be directed to one of two places as follows:

    • IF the Student has ACCESS to BLACKBOARD, then the student should be directed to the Bb Help Center for assistance. There is a link to this in the course menu for your course.
    • IF the Student CANNOT ACCESS Blackboard, then the student should be directed to Submit a Support Ticket on the CGCE Student Portal located at http://students.rowanu.com.

  • Technical Support for Faculty

If you require assistance or support at any time during instruction of your course, contact your assigned Instructional Designer directly via email or phone. The tech support hotline is provided for our students, but not recommended for our faculty. Should you have an urgent issue over an evening or weekend, please submit an online support ticket. To submit an online support ticket, please do the following: (1) Go to http://faculty.rowanonline.com; (2) click on CGCE Support Center; (3) click on Submit a Ticket in the CGCE Support Ticket System window; and (4) fill in the information under Your ticket details. Be specific as possible when submitting your ticket. The Instructional Designer on duty may assist you in off-hours.

  • Blackboard Training

If you would like specific training, or have any technical questions, at any time during instruction, please do not hesitate to contact your assigned Instructional Designer. The Instructional Designer can provide an email with instructions or a phone call walk-through. You can make an appointment to come in for specific training. There is no formal training, so all assistance and training is provided at your request only. However, assistance is immediately available online for faculty. Go to the CGCE Faculty Portal and click on CGCE Support Center to search our Knowledgebase. The Knowledgebase contains a wide variety of articles with detailed step-by-step instructions.

  • Verify Class List

Please Verify your Class List in Blackboard with that in Banner. The information you access in Banner Self-service regarding your class list will always be the most official and up-to-date version. After week 1 of your course, check that you're getting interaction from all the students on your class list and contact those students who seem to be missing. Contact CGCEAcademicServices@rowan.edu with any concerns about a specific student. You are expected to Verify your class list officially in Banner. That date is posted by the Registrar's office and you should receive notification about this requirement. Directions for verifying class lists in Banner are provided on the Registrar's web site and in this downloadable PDF - "How to Verify Class List". The New Bb 9 system automatically manages enrollment. Students who add/drop will be enrolled or un-enrolled (respectively) from your course in Bb within 24 hours.

  • Emailing Your Class Section

New since Fall 2010 in Blackboard 9.1 – you can simply email your entire class from within Blackboard. In your Blackboard course, click on the menu item “Send Email” in the course menu (light blue menu on the left). You will be given a list of options for whom you want to send email to, such as “All Users” which means all users enrolled in your specific course. This email tools will send the subsequent email you draft to each student’s Rowan University Student Email (not an internal Bb email such as before). Students are required via CGCE policy to check their Rowan email.

Wrapping Up Your CGCE Course

To help faculty wrap up their CGCE course (in the last week or just following), some important points and reminders have been outlined:

  • Final Grades

The Registrar’s Office requires that instructors submit final grades to the Banner System within 5 working days after the course has ended (for more information about this policy and assigned grades requirements, visit the Faculty portion of the registrar's web site at http://www.rowan.edu/provost/registrar/faculty.html). Instructions for posting final grades in Banner are available on the Registrar's web site and in this downloadable PDF - “How to post final Grades”. For further assistance posting grades, please contact your assigned CGCE Instructional Designer, or submit an online support ticket.

    • Notice – for courses that are participating in CGCE online evaluations, we allow students to participate in evaluations starting on Tuesday of the last week of your course and ending 11:59 PM on the Thursday after your course ends (9 day evaluation period). To ensure fairness in the evaluation process for both the students and you as the instructor, please wait until after the evaluation period to release your final grades to your students.
    • If you are unable to post grades within the specified period, please notify your department chair. Your parent college/department will receive a list of courses missing final grades from the registrar. Each College/Dept. handles following up with this list differently.
  • Grades in Blackboard

In addition to Banner, faculty should also post final grades in the Blackboard Grade Center. A column titled “Final Grade” should be available in your course's Grade Center. Please contact your assigned Instructional Designer to create one for you if it does not exist. You can also contact your Instructional Designer; submit an online support ticket for further assistance with the Grade Center and entering grades; or view our Knowledgebase article on this topic for step-by-step instructions.

  • IMPORTANT: Limited Time to Access the Course
Faculty & Students will continue to have access to their current courses for 30 days after the last day of class. After 30 days, the course will be archived and removed from the system. This policy is enforced due to licensed space limitations in the Blackboard system. Extensions to the course end date must be requested in writing by your program coordinator of Department Chair to the CGCE Director of Online Services.
Students are expected to archive or back-up their work prior to the end of this 30 day period. CGCE online services will not restore files or work from an archived online/hybrid course for students. A notice will be broadcasted to the students in Blackboard as a reminder of this policy. The course will only be restored if necessary for a grade challenge or related circumstance. Faculty members are advised to save any materials from the course that they wish to continue to have access to once the course is archived, including their course's Grade Center (see below).
  • IMPORTANT: Back-up Your Grade Center
Faculty must back-up (download) a copy of the Grade Center for each course they are teaching after all grades have been entered. Click here for step-by-step instructions on to download (back-up) the Grade Center as an Excel Spreadsheet in Blackboard.
